Open Farm Day, Winter Boxes, and Chickens on Vacation

Posted on by Tim Livingstone

Open Farm Day This Sunday:  The farm will be open this Sunday afternoon from 12:00 to 4:00 for anyone who would like to come see the farm, the animals, and lots of veggies.  Looks like all the animals will be around the house this year so we won't be doing tractor wagon rides but we will be doing walking tours and will have the Gator available for personalized tours for those who may not be able to walk.  Bring the whole family and come on out to see how your food is grown.

We harvested some of our first winter squash today along with quite a few more melons and some pumpkins.  We wanted to get an idea of what we have so we can determine our numbers for the winter program.

Looks like we will be able to offer a good winter program this year with diversity and some really nice crops.  We are improving our storages and we have seeded lots of greens so we can offer greens well into the winter.  This along with some heat in our main greenhouse should make a big difference and improve our winter boxes considerably over what we were able to offer last year.

I will send out an email notice and post on Facebook when our winter program is online and ready to go.  I hope to have it set before the end of the week.

Unfortunately our chickens have decided to take a bit of an unplanned vacation.  Their production is down to about 75% of what it was.  The same thing happened around this time last year and would thought it was lights, but we have been running the lights.  We've made a couple other changes hoping they will help but it remains a bit of a mystery...  We are hopeful that they will pick up again shortly and return to normal - keeping their holiday short.
